1995 Funded Projects

In 1995 there were twelve full projects and three developmental projects that were funded by the West Coast NURC.

The twelve projects and the Principal Investigators were:

  • In Situ Observations on the Distribution and Behavior of Juvenile and Adult Walleye Pollock (Theragra chalcogramma) in Relation to Oceanographic Conditions in the Bering Sea--Dr. Richard D. Brodeur

  • Recruitment of Juvenile Flatfishes in Relation to Substrate, Topography, and Currents--Dr. Brenda Norcross

  • Development of a Mating Aggregation of Tanner Crab Chionoecetes bairdi-- Dr. Bradley Stevens

  • Active Faulting on the Oregon and Washington Continental Shelf: Implications for Earthquake Potential and Crustal Rotation--Dr. LaVerne Kulm

  • Design, Construction, and Deployment of a Portable, Flexible, Light-weight hydrothermal Fluid Sampling System -- Dr. Hugh Milburn

  • Gametogenic ecology of a deep-sea hydrothermal vent community -- Dr. Cindy Lee Van Dover

  • Elevated Invertebrate and Fish Production in Submarine Canyons: Effects of Macrophyte Detritus -- Dr. Paul K. Dayton

  • Origin and Emergence of Mendocino Ridge -- Dr. Martin R. Fisk and Dr. Robert A. Duncan

  • Behavior and Adaptations Related to the Feeding and Locomotion of Deep-Sea Brittlestars in the San Diego Trough--Dr. Gordon Hendler

  • Feeding and Locomotory Behavior of Deep-Sea Brittlestars in the San Diego Trough--Dr. Joel Martin

  • Structure, succession and phylogenetic affinities of deep-sea whale-fall communities on the northeast Pacific slope--Dr. Craig R. Smith



The three developmental projects were:

  • Side-Scan Sonar Study of Fish Habitats Groundtruthed by Submersible--Victoria O'Connell

  • Testing Faunal Zonation of Rock Walls, San Juan Channel, Washington--Charles Thayer

  • Impacts of Bottom Trawling Disturbance to Benthic Communities: Short- and Long-Term Consequences in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary--John Oliver and Rikk Kvitek
