Characteristics and capabilities for two manned submersibles currently available to the West Coast & Polar Regions Center for leasing are described below. For information on other system capabilities, limitations, options, costs, and availability, contact the Center or the vehicle operators.  Other occupied submersibles operating in the Center’s region may be considered if they meet the necessary safety requirements.

Delta is a two-person submersible (pilot and scientist) operated by Delta Oceanographics. It has a depth capability of 366 m (1,200 ft), nineteen viewing ports, and mechanical and hydraulic manipulators. Delta is outfitted with externally mounted still and video cameras (analog). Delta has conducted operations from ships-of-opportunity from the Arctic to the tropics.

Alvin is a three-person vehicle (pilot and two scientists) operated by the National Deep Submergence Facility at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, on behalf of the National Science Foundation. Maximum operating depth is 4,500 m (14,764 ft).  Alvin has three viewing ports, video and still cameras, two manipulators, and can be fitted with a variety of other specialized equipment. A pending upgrade will replace the digital video and still cameras with HD cameras capable of recording onto standard or HD media.
